Hidden Links Still Working
I have been watching a free web counter site that sells massive amounts of image links tied to their free hit counters and obtains top rankings for their shady link buyers. I could never use these type of links with a clean conscious but they do seem to work extremely well.
The magic of “free” counters is they tend to be used by students, faculty, and professors that have some web space on their EDU site. Since Universities don’t make stats available to the rank and file, these small .EDU websites tend to use free counters to get an idea if anyone is visiting their website. Little do they know, for that free counter they are most likely promoting some shady drug, gambling, or porn site.
Here is and example of the counter code that works so well – the identities of participating sites remains hidden: (I’m no snitch):

I am not sure what else I can say, I preach day after day that webmasters should get links on relevant websites. Then I feel like an idiot when I run across this stuff that proves me wrong on such an absurd level. I’m not sure if anything goes when it comes to buying and selling links, but that Google can’t sniff these out is simply baffling.
