October 26, 2009 | By Amir Shkolnik In Internet Marketing | Learning new skills can be a huge stumbling block for many people. This is especially so if the same thing has been taught for a long period of time and is ingrained in our minds. Your mind has been used to doing things one way and when it needs to learn something different, the transition can be difficult. When it comes to network marketing, there is no difference at all.

Today marks the end of an era. Over 18 million websites are being deleted and Yahoo!’s free hosting service Geocities is being shut down for good. Long-forgotten personal sites lying dormant on their servers would occasionally pop up in a Google search and remind us all of the early days of HTML. Geocities marked a point in time when the internet first began to gain popularity, more and more excited computer owners were getting connected in their homes with the power of 33k modems clogging up their phone lines.

Easy AdSense by Unreal I know that this video of Google co-founder Sergey Brin at Web 2.0 Summit is widely circulating the interwebz, but not everyone is taking the time to watch it and highlight the interesting sound bites. Here are some of the choicest quotes from Brin: “I did not try to buy Twitter” Admitted that AdWords was “a very lucrative revenue stream” although that wasn’t always the case. “The internet is disproportionately efficient” as an advertising platform, compared to traditional advertising platforms.

A couple of years back Bill Gates introduce the idea of Convergence to the public. It was a fresh idea that later became a catchphrase for the Internet Industry. However, that promised marriage between the TV and the PC/Internet did not fully come into being. As a result Microsoft lost millions in their MSN TV initiative. But that is all in the past. Today, the tide had finally turned. There are many questions about how to get people follow you on Twitter. Many persons also bumped into the tight spot of which name to use for their twitter account. Choices are often between their name and their business name. Twitter, as the way it works is that people choose to follow you based on the messages or “tweets” you send out. You, in turn, can follow other Twitterers. The key is to find interesting people to follow. The more interesting your tweets are the more people will want to follow you.
10/26/2009
If you are new to Twitter, there are a lot of things you should know. Many people are being confused in making their account because they cannot decide whether to use their name or their business name. This should not be the issue because people follow you because of your tweets and not because of your name. You, in return should also follow the tweets which interest you. In this way of making your tweet, always make sure that your subject is captivating so that many people will follow you.

It was bound to happen, both Google and Bing have been targeting social media and real-time search since the launch of Google caffeine back in August 2009, roughly the same time that Google started to index tweets from Twitter.com. On October 21st during the Web 2.0 Summit, Yusuf Mehdi of Bing officially confirmed partnerships with Twitter and Facebook to integrate public tweets and Facebook updates into its search results. A few hours later Marrisa Mayer of Google also announced  a partnership with Twitter in her presentation at the Web 2.0 Summit.

The famous Web 2.0 Summit wrapped up late last week with lots and lots of product announcements and more news stories than I could ever hope to digest. (Not helped by the fact that I have been sick for about 4 days now.) Anyway here are a few summary items: If teens are confused by Twitter but love Facebook what does that tell us? Could it be the nature of the communication, to quote the NY Times : “Many people use it for professional purposes — keeping connected with industry contacts and following news,” said Evan Williams, Twitter’s co-founder and chief executive.

I am just back from DigitalHollywood show. There was one question I heard more loudly than any other no matter which session I attended; “How do we monetize content?” The question now takes on an urgent tone as more and more traditional media struggle to answer that question before it’s too late. And coincidentally, the dialogue at DigitalHollywood seemed a real world extension of the Ad Age article I had written that just was just published; Why Charging for Online Content (Mostly) Won’t Work.

Ad agencies have many tools available for understanding how their business is running. Whether online or offline, plenty of methods are used to calculate your return on investment (ROI) or understanding how well a campaign is performing versus another. However, call tracking provides an application that streamlines your analytics into one web based format. This allows any marketer, from novice to highly experienced, to develop sound conclusions on marketing and advertising efforts.

These days, I spend more time on the Hunter Kayak Klan site than I do here. That site keeps me in touch with the people I actually paddle with and the Aus Seakayak forum keeps me communicating with paddlers further afield. So this blog is getting relegated to its original intention and that’s to record the stuff I get up to on a personal level. As a retailer and marketer, I spent a lot of time trying to get this blog some readership and some influence.

I have been interested in the field of expertise location for over a decade, from back when knowledge managers were building ‘corporate yellow pages’ and other tools to find the best expertise in the organization. Unless a large organization can bring the most relevant expertise within the firm to bear on the problems and issues at hand, it really has no reason to exist. A smaller more nimble organization could do as good a job with lower costs.
