WeddingChannel.com success story Back in 1996 it was much more difficult to establish an online business; there were no e-commerce platforms, no ready to implement billing systems or no software to run an internet shop on. So Tim and Ray, the founders of the business whom I introduced in my previous post about the WeddingChannel.com , decided to go with a venture capital company, which helped to create the WeddingChannel.com website. They also acquired funds to advertise to big brands right from the beginning.

Montreal-based StatusNet, developer of an open source micro-blogging platform have received $875,000 in funding for their startup from iNovia Capital as well as European angel investor Oleg Tscheltzoff of Fotolia.com. “We’re excited by the opportunity for growth this investment brings,” says Evan Prodromou, CEO of StatusNet Inc. “We plan to use this capital to build the sales, support and marketing power needed to take our software and services to the marketplace.” The company is trying to be the “ Wordpress of the the micro-blogging world,” which is a big task in itself as many have tried to break into the micro-blogging world but have fall short.

Launching in beta today is MyCE , a community-driven network that aims to cross swords with the CNETs and GDGTs of this world when it comes to building places on the Web people gather to share news, reviews and knowledge about consumer electronics and gadgets. The site is a new venture from Amsterdam, The Netherlands-based RankOne Media . Actually, it’s not entirely new. MyCE is in fact the rebranded version of CDFreaks.com, an online community founded in 2007 focused solely on optical storage devices.

October 28th 2009Market Commentary The futures are currently pointing downwards after 3 consecutive days of weakness. Economic data was mixed yesterday as housing was better than expected, while consumer confidence was worse. Durable goods at 8:30am were in line with expectations rising 1%.So far 185 of 219 S & P companies have reported better than expected earnings, yet many people are concerned that this is due to significant cost cutting and not due to increased sales.The SPY closed below the 20 EMA on the Daily yesterday and looks like it may be headed back to test the 50 EMA at $105.10.

Red Bend , a VC-backed mobile phone software developer, is taking Google to court over alleged infringement of a patent it holds. In its legal complaint filed earlier this week in Boston’s district court, Red Bend claims the Internet giant is using a patented algorithm that allows it to issue smaller-sized updates for its Chrome Web browser. The software maker says it has invented technology that enables wireless carriers to distribute updates for mobile-phone software and that Google’s updating process for Chrome uses a similar differential compression algorithm called Courgette (that’d be the French word for zucchini).

We previously discussed the fact that the term lawsuit loan is a misnomer. It is not a loan at all! The correct term would be settlement funding, funding that is provided in advance of settling your claim. Many view this type of funding as a form of venture-capital. The fact that the applicant incurs no risk, viz., is non-recourse, as a result of a settlement loan, is an important aspect of this form of funding. The process begins when the lender and applicant strike an agreement.

A wise man once said, “It isn’t the capital that is scarce, but the vision”; On the one hand, we have people who’ve the wherewithal, but are lacking in the big idea department; and on the other hand we’ve people armed with nothing but ideas! Put them in a startup eco-system, we’ve one group of VC’s complaining about the lack of “quality” ideas and the entrepreneurs complaining about how clueless the VC’s are . How is it that we bring a synergy across these groups was what e27 eChelon was all about.
