90% of success is showing up. – Woody Allen This is oft repeated as an entrepreneur mantra.  And, yes – you need to show up, but you also need to show up with something. We all know them: The gung-ho board member of a nonprofit, who – if he actually does show up – comes late and unprepared, albeit still gung ho! (And, never actually seems to do any of those great things he talks about.) The excited new entrepreneur who feverishly works the room at seemingly every event in town…forces you to take her biz card (for the 12th time)…yet never seems to have any business.

I say this, because I too speak of these things, both passionately and often. Their importance goes without questioning. Each cannot be given, and consequently must be earned. Each is intrinsically valuable in and of itself, and may stand as a singular example of character.

Inspiration is critical to staying motivated and getting ahead. If you are not really interested in what you do at work you will not stay motivated for long enough to realise your dreams. Go to take an honest look at how motivated you feel. Are you excited about your occupation? Or is it a drag? It is so easy to lose interest in what we do unless we are really excited about it. This sustains us through problems and setbacks. That makes sense, for sure. So love what you do now, or else go and find a way to do what you love! Setting Goals.

Bangalore played host to the Nasscom Product Conclave over the last couple of days, and it was a brilliantly organized event. The best part of it, imo, was the cross section of participants the event was able to pull in. The sessions were useful, deeper than usual, and because of these reasons, packed.

We hear enough about reasons why it might be good to do a graduate degree.  Heck, we don’t even need to hear the reasons anymore because they are so ingrained in the discourse of college and early career-building phases themselves. But how often do you see meetings, books, or announcements about the reasons you should not do a grad degree?  About the fact that it’s not for everyone and knocks the wind right out of many? Thinking about whether grad school is right for you?

In 1980, Reagan won the election by attracting a substantial portion of Democrats with three simple ideas. First was the fight against the Soviet Union. Second, the battle against the excesses of the state: “Government is the problem, not the solution,” Reagan famously said. Third, and most relevant to this discussion, was an overarching faith in economic growth. But there still are plenty of legal tax havens for law-abiding taxpayers. Even better, most regular Joe and Jane taxpayers can easily take advantage of them.
