Yesterday, the National Venture Capital Association published its fifth overview of the impact of companies backed by venture capital investment in the U.S. economy. The numbers are very interesting and provide data to support my theory that these high-growth startups are playing an increasingly important role in American business. When I wrote Creative Capital, my book about the history of venture capital that was published last year, the 2007 NVCA survey that I cited found that as of the end of 2005 venture-backed companies accounted for 10 million jobs and nearly 17% of gross domestic product.

Entrepreneur and angel investor Marc Andreessen, who recently became a fully-fledged venture capitalist with the launch of his firm Andreessen Horowitz , has joined the board of directors at computer maker Hewlett Packard . HP likes to stay connected with the venture and startup communities, so Andreessen isn’t the first venture capitalist on its board. Tom Perkins, co-founder of top venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers , famously left the board in 2006 after learning that HP had authorized consultants to spy on its directors.

My column today on Fin24.com was on what venture capital firms in the Western Cape are getting right compared to the rest of the country. I was honestly expecting it to raise a bit more debate than it did but maybe it was just a case of stating too much of the obvious? This whole debate of South Africa not making an effort to support innovative small business owners / entrepreneurs seems to go on and on with no real solution to it.

Last week, James D. Robinson told us how he became a VC and what prompted him to launch RRE Ventures , a New York and Silicon Valley based VC firm that manages US$850 million in investment assets and injects up to US$15 million in a single company over its lifetime. Today, Robinson gives his take on Valley-based startups, business plans, Marc Andreessen’s fund, and more. VH: Do startups in Silicon Valley really have an advantage? Why or why not? JR : Yes and it depends.

photo credit: Soon. Reinvested profits are perfect. The best source of “venture capital” for an existing business is money your company is already generating. Many entrepreneurs miss growth opportunities by spending profits in unproductive ways. Others take the opposite extreme, pumping every penny into the business while taking nothing for themselves. Both can backfire. Many business owners tend to wait until the last minute before going after sources for finding credit that they need right away.

ADOTAS — Even though it remains free of revenue, the latest funding round for Twitter has turned the Internet startup into a billion-dollar company. A source told TechCrunch that the primary investor in the $50 million dollars the site raised is Insight Venture Partners, which was also an early investor in Photobucket before it was purchased by News Corp./MySpace in 2007. Another source suggested that Twitter may not cap the funding at $50 million in an effort to keep the cash mound rising.

STEP 3: Prepare a Business Plan
Once I have done all the preparations, I would start creating a detailed business plan – a document that will provide the priorities, strategies, agenda and sanity I?ll need to startup my business.
In my experience and observation of the business world, the ?activity? of creating a business plan is as valuable as the end product itself. Just remember that the most important audience for a business plan is ME. I am accountable for all the statements, claims, statistics and facts.

Illinois’ So-Called Tech Leaders Have Failed The State – sachinagarwal.com 09/17/2009 So, Chicago’s lacking in tech leadership , says a columnist in the Chicago Tribune. No, it’s not, respond the heads of various tech organizations in Chicago and the State . As someone who’s founded a startup here in Chicago, I’m certainly more inclined to agree with the Trib columnist than with the panel. However, I’m also a policy wonk – so I decided to take a look at the data to see who’s right.

In some earlier postings , I discussed the pending case against Skype filed in the UK concerning key VoIP technologies. The main point was that eBay did a less than perfect job of gaining control over key intangible assets when it bought Skype. Now the battle has heated up as the former owners – through their new company Joltid Limited, which controls the software code – have filed a new lawsuit here in the US for copyright violations. This new lawsuit includes the investors who have agreed to buy a majority stake in Skype from eBay.

The way you handle your capital, cost and profit will determine your success or failure in the world of trade industry. One of the most important factors is how you are at raising additional capital. When not handled properly you will surely have some unexpected expenses on your hands. Being flexible in raising additional capital will give you more advantages then being stiff and rigid in allocating your funds. Some businessmen are rigid in the hopes that they will salvage some of their losses unfortunately this is a misconception.

It started with a couple middle-aged guys wondering what to do with their lives. Nothing unusual about that. But these two had been running a venture capital firm together for a decade and found themselves asking this question in 2008, when the financial system was melting down, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were dragging on seemingly without end, and the environment appeared to be reacting to years of abuse by unleashing massive hurricanes and tidal waves.

Romeo & Juliet – The Music Edition Baz Luhrmann ( Strictly Ballroom ) takes a shot at reinventing Shakespeare’s story of star-crossed lovers as a visual pastiche inspired by MTV imagery, Hong Kong action-picture clich s, and Luhrmann’s own taste for deliberate, gaudy excess. Stubbornness can be a tricky thing for a person in a powerful position. Depends if you’re on the side of the angels. Superintendent of Schools John Ramos has power. When you’re making a quarter of a million dollars a year with some nice perks to boot doing battle with a couple of dozen school nurses with a base pay four times less it can be time consuming and irrational, especially when they had a clear agreement to receive a 52-week pay period including summers of — just like teachers — in exchange for zero pay increase for four years.

Much has changed in entrepreneurship since the dot com crash and Sarbanes Oxley. Investment capital dried up, IPO’s are no longer the holy grail and it seems an investment chasm has formed between $1 million and $5 million. In this new environment, an emerging business is lucky to be offered a term sheet of any type. To quote Sig Mosley: “The bar has been raised.” Imlay investments did five new deals in 2008 but hasn’t done any in 2009.
