In venture capital, Vinod Khosla likes to go his own way, which is why he’s been so successful. He was the founding CEO of Sun Microsystems, and then moved to venture capital and became a star partner at Kleiner Perkins, where he backed Juniper Networks, Cerent (sold to Cisco for $7 billion) and NexGen [...] Related posts: Vinod Khosla, Risk Junkie I haven’t been much of a cleantech bull in the… Khosla Ventures Raises $1.1 Billion. I really appreciate the venture capitalists (VCs) in Silicon Valley subsidizing my soapbox at Twitter. Really, it is an absolutely awesome platform for getting a message out to the masses. But at some point I worry that the gravy train will come to an end and that users will have to start picking up part of the tab. After all, will those VCs continue to subsidize Twitter if it never turns a profit? According to the Wikipedia entry about Twitter : In total, Twitter has raised over US$ 57 million from venture capitalists .

Silicon Valley investors are accustomed to searching for the next great start-up to nurture. In Uruguay, the country’s only venture capital fund is itself a start-up. Prosperitas Capital Partners ’ co-founder Pablo Brenner told me last week on a visit to Montevideo that when he launched the company in 2005, “nobody was ready, not even the lawyers.” He said he had to write the first term sheets himself. But earlier this year, the fund pulled off its first successful exit .

The other day I read an article on CNN about how states are looking to add new sin taxes and other revenue streams to address their income shortfall for 2010. A key quote struck me that I want to look at from the other side. Sujit CanagaRetna , a senior fiscal analyst for the Council of State Governments said, “Basically, what we are dealing with is a larger issue here, which states have been grappling now for a few years, that is the shift in our economy away from manufacturing economy to a service-based economy.” He went on to say that when sales tax doesn’t apply, states aren’t able to capture economic activity.

I had hoped that by 25, I would have been living in LA, dating actresses, and getting bit parts in bad movies as “the ugly guy”… you know, in the event that the studio wanted a Steve Buscemi-type, but not the Steve Buscemi. Instead, I’m 26, broke, and trapped in Glens Falls, New York. I vent my frustrations by writing comedy pieces for the Huffington Post, I run a blog about social publishing , and, for some odd reason, I’m more popular than Serena Williams, Newt Gingrich, and Stephen Colbert … on Twitter.

Wow, the Techstars Boston Investor Day last Thursday was great! I can’t believe the progress made in the past month by the teams. I’ve been a very absent Techstars advisor for the past month, so I didn’t know what to expect. Everyone in the crowd seemed impressed by the startups, and I felt a great vibe and high level of interest from some of the well-known Boston angel investors I spoke with during the event. Andrew Hyde mentioned to me that it felt a lot like Investor Day at the 1st Techstars Boulder in 2007 – and that 3 of those companies have had successful exits.

I started becoming interested in the prospect of owning my own website or being a “dot com” before the turn of the century and began attending seminars on how to get a website, web design, earning from banners and the like only to find that I was mostly being pitched packages and do it for you media development for tens of thousands of dollars. I walked away from all of those seminars and weekend courses a bit discouraged and thankfully without buying into anything just yet.

The children on our block may be poor, but they are not dumb. Last night I saw them going around to different adults in the block asking for money. I wasn’t too pleased, but I let it go just to see what was up. First thing this morning, they were up and running of to the store to buy some mix for lemonade and some lemons. As the temperatures soared into the nineties, those little ones sat out in the sun, selling lemonade. They would run in for ice every so often. They made nearly twenty five

Yes Virginia, There Are Angel Investors in the Southeast In what many call the worse economic times of a generation, early stage companies are finding the business capital they need to grow their businesses. Banks have yet to step up to the plate and release the strangle hold they have put on the growth of small business owners. Angel investors are realizing the historic opportunity before them to create great wealth by providing early stage venture capital financing to qualified entrepreneurs in order to bring innovation to market and create jobs.
