Seth Godin has a short but sweet post (the best kind) up on the need to flip the way you think about free, abundance, and scarcity . Seth was one of the first people to experiment with free and he has been a longstanding inspiration to me in this way of thinking. During the late 90s, he gave away a number of his books for free in soft copy before the book was published. In doing so, he built up a word of mouth phenomenon that drove the sales of the hard cover when it came out.

I think Google Adsense is great for everyone to the first timers to the probloggers that are out there. You just don’t want a lot of Google Adsense ads on your blog. You can only have three Google Ads on a page. You will see probloggers like Darren Rowse from www.problogger.net still use Google Adsense. He uses Google Adsense into his RSS Feed, or sometimes you will see a small 125 X 125 banner of a Google Adsense on his blog. The down side of Google Adsense and any service like them is that you need a lot of traffic if you want to be successful at it.

His newest book, All Marketers are Liars , has already made the Amazon Top 100 and has inspired its own blog. We think of sports and can’t help but thing of “ Michael Jordan ” when someone mentions basketball, or Arnold Schwarzenegger when someone mentions bodybuilding. Who do we think of when someone talks about internet marketing?  How about  Seth Godin ?  He is the ninja of ninjas when it comes to the internet or making money off of it. He’s is not only a incredibly generous guy, he is a genius as well.

We talk about our childhood heros, like batman, superman, spiderman and all the other great superhero figures, and we aspire to take after them – not so much in developing supernatural powers – but more so the kind of character traits they imprinted in our minds.  They were a great asset to society and filled a need society had in their time. We are mixing things up here again on the blog a bit. We are calling it the 5th revision but its probably more like the 10th… just the 5th since we got advertisers started keeping track. The New Comment System I love commentators and think they are important to a blog. You always want to keep commentators in perspective and be careful of spammers. Long time ShoeMoney readers know I have played around with many various comment systems and have even done crazy contests and other stuff.

Since forever, John Chow has been praising and preaching the idea of following everyone on Twitter who follows you, in order to avoid “negative social proof”,  whatever that is. He went so far as to make a whole website dedicated to getting you more followers, as long as you follow them back (much like the MySpace whore trains). Now suddenly, he’s backflipped and seen the error of this theory that we’ve known all along; that it’s pointless, unmanageable, and serves no purpose but to put a large number on your profile.

Everyone is sick of talking about how pie charts suck. And whenever I do a charting post, it’s trouble. So this post is destined for failure. However, I was thinking about pie charts recently. I don’t have the disdain for pie charts that some do, but I generally agree with the majority of pie-haters that it is an overused and abused chart type. I think pie charts can be effective when you have two data points; three at most; never more than three. Pie charts are difficult because they rely on area.
