Giving truly great presentations requires skill, work, and practice. Giving catastrophic presentations is far easier. So if you want to take the easy way out and look like a rank amateur, here are 15 surefire tips to guarantee that you leave a really, really bad impression.1. Misspell words. Failing to check the spelling on your slides shows a complete lack of care. If you don’t care enough to proof your presentation, your audience will care less about you and your message.

Back in July, we hosted a customer development workshop for some Polaris portfolio companies and Dog Patch Labs denizens, lead by Eric Ries and Sean Ellis. Life as a small, private company offering online word processors, spreadsheets and e-mail — just like the mighty Google — would seem perilous indeed. And now Microsoft plans to jump into this market too. Nodding to the Web, the company said last month that it would offer basic online Office programs, free and supported by ads, along with the next version of its productivity suite, Office 2010. But Zoho, a company based in Pleasanton, Calif.

I recently read “ A Farm on Every Floor ,” an opinion piece in the NY Times by Dickson Despommier. In the letter, the author attempts to make the case for what he calls urban “vertical farms.” The idea is that we’re running out of farmable land, farmer-applied chemicals are rendering our soil unusable, and the world population is booming so we need a new, soil-less way to farm. In particular, he suggests we can build these vertical farms in buildings in the middle of large cities.

Bill Gurley posted a really nice summary of one of the main problems with the venture capital industry, and Fred Wilson responded here. I totally agree with their analysis, but would add one more major problem with the venture industry to the list. The fact that most VCs get rich via “management fees” just by showing up every day. There doesn’t seem to be a week that goes by without someone lamenting the sorry state of the venture capital market or our favorite exit ramp: the IPO market. Granted, the overall number of offerings in the past 7 to 8 years has been paltry. Notable individual exceptions are Google (2004), SynchronOSS Technologies (2006) and, more recently, Open Table and SolarWinds (both 2009). But let’s face it: if yours is a venture-backed company, you have had higher odds of being struck by lightening than going public in this first decade of the 21st century.

The criteria used by angel investors to evaluate and select investments are usually a mystery. The folks at Venture360 have recently taken a stab at demystifying this process. A recently completed analysis of angel deals closed in the first half of 2009 showed some surprising results – the quality of a venture’s management team was four times more influential in funding decisions than more traditional factors like the venture’s economic model, deal structure, and projected revenue growth.
