And dumb or not in a democracy one has to follow the people. It's still not popular in India but I decided to join it after reading about it in Newspapers for over 6 months. I think the spam and serial tweeters are only going to get worse. I am not sure how its going to evolve but it'll be interesting if it keeps growing. On the one hand, I agree with you that Twitter has not helped my business grow. On the other hand, I'm enjoying Twitter simply as a social place. I follow fewer than 30 people, and most of them are people I know personally and enjoy. I only check Twitter 2 or 3 times a day - when I feel like a break. It's kind of like taking a walk around the office and having a chat with my favorite people. And yes, that is just as much of a time waster in the virtual world as it is in the "real world".
