Hidden Links Still Work Great For Top Rankings

I have been watching a free web counter site that sells massive amounts of image links tied to their free hit counters and obtains top rankings for their link buyers. I could never sell these type of links with a clean conscious but they do seem to work extremely well. Here is and example of the counter code that works so well (identities of sites hidden of course):

<a href=”http://example-some-paid-link.com/”><img src=”http://******Some-web-counter-site.com/make-money-online-1k4p8.png” alt=”make money online” border=”2″></a>

I am not sure what else I can say, I preach day after day that webmasters should get natural links in content, then I run across this stuff that proves me wrong day after day. Simply baffling.
