Twitter – Time to Start Building Followers

• May 12, 2008

So far I only have 39 44 followers built up over my first few weeks Twitter. Of course, this blog is brand new and I don’t have a herd of blog readers to ask for a follow on Twitter. So most of my current followers are people I have met at conventions and know online via my LinkAdage and LinkXL businesses.

However, now that I am understanding the potential value Twitter a bit more, I am going to ask my LinkAdage members to give me a Twitter follow. I also am writing a cool Twitter application that should bring in more followers, especially if it goes viral. I’ll give more details on my Twitter app when it is completed, working, and released.

Anyway, with these two strategies I hope to be close to or over 500 followers within 6 to 8 weeks. 500 followers seems to be a bit of a magic number on Twitter. If you can get to this level each question you ask or answer on Twitter tends to bring followers.

One thing that drives me nuts on Twitter are people that constantly post worthless information. I don’t care if you’re waiting in line for a coffee at Starbucks or standing at the airport baggage claim. So with more followers comes more responsibility to do tweets with substance (at least most of the time). With 39 44 followers I am pretty much anonymous and might as well be writing to a secret journal on my hard drive.

Enough Twitter talk for now, in a few months I’ll report on my follower building process and give more details as to how I reached (or did not reach) my follower goals. I’ll also report on any business benefits that having a strong twitter follower base gives me. Stay tuned for more Twitter information.
